Grades 5-8

Grades  5-8 are combination classes depending on the number of students within those grades. These grades have core and choice classes and a teacher who is with the class throughout the day, along with the special subject teachers.

The Core Subjects that all the students have together include:

  • Art
  • Handwork
  • Vocal Music
  • Games and Movement

There are several Choice Subjects from which t 5-8 graders may choose.

  • Every eight weeks there are new choice subjects added from which the student may choose. These might include:
    • Spanish
    • Cooking
    • Baking
    • Speed stacking
    • Creative writing
    • Musical theater performance
    • Sports
    • Jump rope team
    • Ukelele
    • Outdoor cooking skills
    • Candle and soap making
    • Service projects
  • Orchestra –  violin, viola, cello or bass
    (Parents are responsible for the rental or purchase of an instrument and method books – there is financial assistance for the rental of the instrument and cost of method books)
  • Band (once students reach 5th grade – they are invited to participate in band)

  • Recorder or Irish Flute (school provides)

When students choose Orchestra, there are additional days set aside for HomeSchool students during the week where  Ms. Panning, the Orchestra Teacher, gives extra lessons at no charge. And, if the student is already skilled in playing a string instrument, they may join the orchestra with the full-time Mountain Phoenix students for additional orchestra classes.

Students in grades 6-8 are also welcome to participate in Middle School athletics such as track, volleyball and basketball.

Ms. Kate, the vocal music teacher, directs the Mountain Phoenix Chorale a partner community choir with the Colorado Children’s Chorale (CCC). All homeschool students in grades 2-8 are welcome to participate in the chorale. Being part of the Mountain Phoenix Chorale provides students with the opportunity to perform at the CCC concerts and to audition for the CCC. 

Ms. Kate, also offers homeschool students private piano and voice lessons for a small fee. Lessons are held on campus.
